F-SPPI General Chair Dr. Rizal Djibran Calls for Strengthening the Film Workers’ Base

“A strong trade union is not simply a large union, but one that is capable of building workers’ consciousness, fostering solidarity, upholding democracy, and continuously adapting to changes in the world of work,” said Dr. Rizal Djibran.

JAKARTA, thewasesanews.com — General Chair of the Federation of Indonesian Film Workers’ Unions (F-SPPI), dr rizal djibran calls for strengthening film workers base through workers’ education, cadre development, internal democracy, and solidarity across organizations.

He made the statement during the discussion “Towards a Future Format for the Trade Union Movement”, organized by GEKANAS in Jakarta.

According to Rizal, the strength of a trade union is determined not merely by the number of its members or organizations, but by its ability to build union consciousness, workers’ understanding of their rights, organizational capacity, and solidarity.

He argued that fragmentation within the labour movement needs to be addressed through democracy, organizational ethics, consensus-building, independence, and a shared struggle agenda. Consolidation, he stressed, does not mean making all organizations uniform, but rather bringing workers’ common interests together.

In the film industry, organizing workers presents particular challenges because the industry is project-based, involves diverse occupations and professions, and is characterized by dynamic employment relationships. Therefore, organizing strategies need to reflect the specific characteristics of film workers and the changing nature of work.

Rizal emphasized the importance of workers’ education and continuous cadre development. Cadres should not be prepared merely to become union officials, but should also develop an understanding of labour law, advocacy, leadership, communication, technology, as well as the implications of digitalization and artificial intelligence for employment relations.

Education should also be provided to union leaders so that organizational leadership can continuously develop and respond effectively to changes in the world of work.

F-SPPI promotes four fundamental pillars for strengthening the film workers’ base: internal democracy; education and cadre development; solidarity across organizations; and consolidation around a shared workers’ struggle agenda.

“A strong trade union is not simply a large union, but one that is capable of building workers’ consciousness, fostering solidarity, upholding democracy, and continuously adapting to changes in the world of work,” said Dr. Rizal Djibran.
